Role of an IT Support / PC Maintenance Specialist. Safety: ESD, power, workplace hygiene. PC vs laptop architecture overview. Input/output devices, ports (USB, HDMI, audio, RJ45). Binary/units, storage vs memory. Customer communication basics and how support tickets work. Lab: identify components on open chassis; label ports and cables.
Motherboard form factors, chipset, sockets, BIOS/UEFI introduction. CPU types, cooling, thermal paste. RAM types (DDR3/4/5), compatibility, dual channel. SMPS/PSU ratings, connectors (24-pin, CPU, SATA, PCIe). Common hardware failure symptoms. Lab: RAM reseat/upgrade simulation; PSU connector identification; POST beep interpretation basics.
HDD vs SSD vs NVMe; interfaces (SATA, M.2). Partitioning concepts (preview). Display issues: cable, GPU, resolution, no-display workflow. Keyboards, mice, printers (USB/network overview). Lab: drive install/remove practice; cable troubleshooting matrix; external display setup.
Full desktop build sequence. Cable management. Laptop service: bottom cover, battery, RAM, SSD access (model-dependent caution). Do’s and don’ts for warranty-sensitive devices. Lab: complete assemble–disassemble cycle; document parts list like a service job sheet.
Creating bootable USB (Windows 10/11). Clean install vs upgrade. Disk partitions during setup. Drivers: chipset, display, audio, network. Windows Update strategy. User accounts, local vs Microsoft account. Lab: install Windows on lab machine; install essential drivers; create standard user + admin.
Control Panel & Settings mastery. Device Manager troubleshooting. Disk Management, CHKDSK, storage sense. Startup apps, Task Manager, Resource Monitor. Power plans. System Restore, Reset this PC. Lab: fix “device with issue”; clear startup bloat; create restore point and recover.
Structured troubleshooting: identify → hypothesize → test → resolve → document. No power / no POST / no boot / blue screen / slow PC / overheating. Event Viewer basics. Safe Mode, msconfig, clean boot. Lab: ticket scenarios — student resolves 5 common faults and writes short resolution notes.
LAN/WAN, IP address, subnet basics (practical level), DNS, DHCP. Wi-Fi vs Ethernet. Router vs switch vs modem (home/SOHO). ipconfig, ping, tracert, nslookup. Sharing folders & printers on LAN. Lab: connect PC to network; diagnose “no internet”; share a folder; map network drive.
Strong passwords & Windows Hello awareness. Antivirus / Windows Defender. Browser hygiene, phishing awareness. Backup strategies (local + cloud concept). Safe software installation sources. Lab: configure Defender; create a backup plan; practice a simple file restore workflow.
Printer types, drivers, spooler issues, paper jam vs software faults. Scanners, webcams, external drives. Remote assistance mindset (when/how). Basic office IT checklist for small shops. Lab: install printer; clear print queue; troubleshoot offline printer; USB device conflict exercise.
Talking to non-technical users. Escalation vs resolve. Writing clear ticket notes. Estimating time & parts. Ethics, data privacy, workplace behaviour. Building a simple service rate card for freelancing in Srinagar/J&K market. Lab: role-play 4 customer calls; fill job sheets; present a mini service proposal.
Capstone: End-to-end support case — receive a “faulty” system scenario, diagnose hardware/OS/network, implement fix, document steps, and explain to a mock customer. Practical assessment + short viva.
